Street of Eternal Happiness: Big City Dreams Along a Shanghai Road by Rob Schmitz takes the reader past the big picture of what life is like in a typical Chinese city.  Instead, this book reads like a walk down the street, and the author is just getting to know his neighbors.  He starts at one end of the road; and throughout the book, he follows a few of the people he has met along the way.
As you meet CK, Zhao, Auntie Fu, Uncle Feng and Mayor Chen, you learn how the political and economical changes in China have affected their way of life through the years.  Schmitz could have just blandly spouted facts, and opinions, about life in China. Instead, it has a much broader impact on the reader because you get to know the people.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that would like to learn more about China. It is a fascinating read that gets you interested in the characters he meets.  You learn so much more about China and its history, but you don't feel like you are just reading a stale textbook.
I have always been interested in learning how other people live throughout the world.  This book has just given me a glimpse into the lives of people halfway across the world!
