A Season for Tending Cindy Woodsmall

Wow. Wow! Wow!!! I just finished reading A Season for Tending by Cindy Woodsmall, and my hands are begging to turn the pages of the next book in Cindy’s newest series, Amish Vines and Orchards. A Season for Tending is unlike the author’s other works so far. While Cindy always weaves together believable characters with compelling plots and interesting twists, it seems she has ratcheted up a notch in every area.

When we meet our heroine, Rhoda Byler, we quickly learn that she is a marvel in the garden, having learned by trial and error a number of rather unorthodox methods for nourishing and nurturing her herbs and berry bushes. We also discover that Rhoda has an unusual gift for sensing what others cannot. Unfortunately not everyone in her life sees this as a good and beneficial gift.

Rhoda meets brothers Samuel and Jacob King after first meeting their sister, Leah, in a rather unusual way. The King family are the proprietors of Kings’ Orchard where they grow many varieties of apples. In no time Rhoda and Samuel realize that though they have much in common−both earn their livelihoods from the produce they grow and harvest−they are as likely to agree on any given issue, as the moon is likely to keep the sun from rising. Despite their mutual respect for each other’s abilities, they are like oil and water. Still an unlikely friendship develops between the Bylers and the Kings.

I won’t give more details of the story because I wouldn’t want to risk removing an ounce of the pleasure of reading as every scene unfolds and adds to the beauty of this book. I have read every one of Cindy Woodsmall’s books, from her debut novel onward, and this is by far her crowning achievement to date. The ending was perfectly written to require readers to get their hands as quickly as possible on Amish Vines and Orchards, Book 2 in order to find out what happens next with the characters with whom we have bonded. The only question left unanswered is how soon will the next one be available?

Bravo, Cindy Woodsmall! Bravo!

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
