Performance is a trap that has caught not just the culture, but also much of the American church. When I reference church, I mean people who claim Jesus as their Savior and Lord, yet live for live for the blessing instead of better life in Christ. This book took me a while read. Not because I did not understand the words, but I had to contend with my heart, head and actions against the truth of what I was reading in the book and contained the Bible.
Dr. Larry Crabb does a great job explaining the how while are Christ followers we fall into or attempt to live up to the “Old Way.” The patterns of the “Old Way” are not new; Jesus approaches them and explodes them in the Gospels, yet we tend, if not decidedly dependent on Jesus to live in them for blessing instead of the better life that we can find Jesus Christ.
While the Christ gave his life to pave a “New Way” for Spirit led life, the life not come easily or naturally to all who follow Jesus. Larry Crabb uses Teresa of Avila to illustrate this choice that must be made…”All that the beginner [in the New Way] has to do… is to be resolute and prepare himself with all possible diligence to bring his will into conformity with the will of God… The more perfectly a person practices it, the more he will receive of the Lord.” As one learns and practices the presence and dependence of the Holy Spirit will the “Old Way” fade and the “New Way” become the way to live.
Dr. Larry Crabb allows the reader to process the theoretical to very practical applications of the “New Way.” I found that I was caught in the trap of performance in areas that surprised me. I would highly recommend this book. I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review and was not under obligation to write a positive review.
